Note from Hazzan Kalver about HaZamir, the International Jewish High School Choir. I want you to know about, and care about, HaZamir, the International Jewish High School Choir. I hope to be able to go with some folks from CBI to HaZamir annual gala concert in NYC on Sunday, March 26. What is HaZamir? HaZamir is a Jewish choir for high school-age kids, with about 25 local chapters in the US and Israel. It has about 500 members. HaZamir is very Zionistic and very Jewishly pluralistic. The kids in HaZamir range from able choristers to superstars bound for conservatories, but the sound that they produce is exquisite and inspirational, even putting aside the naches one gets from watching hundreds of fresh-faced Jewish teens, huddled together on a giant stage, singing Jewish songs. My daughter was a HaZamir-nik when she was in high school, and I became and continue to be a devoted fan and supporter and am now on the board of directors of the non-profit organization that runs it. The local chapters meet weekly to learn music that is distributed to all of the chapters, in preparation for an annual weekend festival at which all the chapters come together to rehearse at a hotel in Upstate New York, and then drive down to NYC in buses where they all perform together, as one giant 400-person choir, at a major NYC concert hall. Going to This Year’s HaZamir Concert on March 29. Amazingly, this year’s concert will be on the afternoon of Sunday, March 26, 2017, at…wait for it…THE METROPOLITAN OPERA HOUSE at Lincoln Center. (Bet you didn’t expect that!) This will be an amazing event for the audience and an event of a lifetime for the kids. Ticket prices are around $60. I hope to be able to entice at least a few CBI folk to attend what will absolutely be a spectacular performance.
