Congregation B'nai Israel of Basking Ridge welcomes Robert Kim Bingham on Thursday evening, December 11th at 6:30pm. Mr. Bingham will discuss his book, Courageous Dissent: How Harry Bingham Defied His Government to Save Lives, the story of how his father, Hiram (Harry) Bingham IV, helped thousands escape Nazi Germany during World War II.
In Courageous Dissent: How Harry Bingham Defied His Government to Save Lives, Robert Kim Bingham recounts his father's extraordinary actions during World War II. An American Foreign Service counsel, Harry Bingham defied the U.S. State Department's strict mandates on issuing visas and issued visas to thousands who were trying to flee Nazi Germany at the time. The sixth of eleven children, Mr. Bingham will talk about his father and his book at CBI. The public is welcome to attend this free event.
Robert Kim Bingham has served 31 years as an attorney in the US Department of Justice and 5 years in the Office of Principal Legal Advisor, US Department of Homeland Security. He received his undergraduate degree from Yale University and his law degree at Boston University School of Law, and is a member of the Massachusetts and U.S. Supreme Court bars.
In addition to his career as an author and attorney, Mr. Bingham led a successful seven-year postage stamp campaign for his father from December 1998 until December 2005, when the U.S. Postal Service announced the "Distinguished American Diplomats" stamp series for 2006, which includes the stamp depicting Harry Bingham. The first-day-of-issue ceremony was on May 30, 2006 at the Washington, DC Convention Center.
